"you don't remember dying," he said.
"you remember the breath that brings you back."

the emergency department had settled into its after-midnight rhythm - call lights chiming softly, monitors pulsing like distant stars, the faint smell of antiseptic clinging to everything.

i stood at the sink, retying the strings of my scrub top, hands still carrying muscle memory that hadn't faded in weeks.

gojo lay propped against white pillows, heart monitor steady beside him. color had finally returned to his face. the bruising had faded. proof that time - and luck - had done their part.

"you were already losing your pulse in the ambulance," i said quietly. "you coded again before we reached the bay."

his gaze didn't waver.

"you climbed onto the stretcher," he said. "you kept breathing for me."

my throat tightened.

"i'm an emergency nurse practitioner," i replied. "that's what i'm trained to do."

"no," he said calmly. "it's what you chose to do."

he reached beside the bed and lifted the bouquet resting on the tray - white roses and something darker threaded between them.

"weeks of recovery," he continued, extending them toward me. "and this is still the first time i've been able to say thank you."

i hesitated before taking them.

"first breaths start lives," he murmured.
"second breaths decide them."

and for the first time since the gunshots, i understood something quietly terrifying:

i hadn't just saved a man.

i had become the moment his life started over.
