Nidingsaga - Ascension

Helheim. The resting ground for the disgraced. Those who failed to live up to the standards for Valhalla are sentenced to wander forever through the misty, frozen wastes, with no memory of who they were.

Every now and then, however, a person will end up falling in while they still live. And to those poor unfortunate souls, the Queen of Helheim - lady Hel herself - issues one challenge: to find a way out.

But one such man seems to be struggling to leave. Not for lack of trying, mind you. Recognising the portals don't seem to work on him, he draws nearer to the shores of Gjöll, unaware of just what fate holds for him.

(Consider this the "pilot episode" for the overarching story - an origin story for the hero, to be precise).
