Starstruck

The stars have always been quiet-until the night they start watching back.

The official report says Ari was lost during a routine transfer beyond the perimeter-equipment failure, poor visibility, no witnesses. But Liv was there. She saw the sky bend in on itself, saw the stars flicker like they were being pulled closer, brighter, wrong. She saw something move where nothing should exist. And then Ari was gone.

Now Liv stands back at the base, stationed miles from where it happened, surrounded by concrete walls and humming lights that feel too small after what she witnessed. Every attempt she makes to explain the incident is met with the same response from her commanding officer: there is no evidence, no anomaly, no such thing as supernatural interference. The major's voice is calm, dismissive, final. Stress, he says. Trauma. Grief has a way of rewriting memories.

But Liv knows what she saw.

When Liv looks up at the night sky, the stars seem sharper than before, almost deliberate. She gets the chilling sense that whatever took Ari didn't vanish-it withdrew.
