Hide wouldn't call it an obsession, just simply looking out for his best friend. That was a perfectly good explanation for the stalking and the cameras.
It was perfectly fine to isolate Kaneki away from everyone else, because 'everyone else' was a danger, Hide wasn't dangerous, and Hide loved Kaneki, so it was perfectly acceptable. No, it was that only right thing to do.
