Unable to speak the language, she survived by hiding, learning quickly, and enduring exploitation, eventually escaping when World War II began. Her flight placed her on the same train as James Buchanan Barnes; when danger found her again, she jumped. HYDRA recovered her and erased her identity through experimentation and conditioning, preserving her trauma as a means of control. Her body was altered, her name stripped away.
