Between What Is And What Could Be

As a young, dedicated social worker, Kana Adler believes in systems. In paperwork, procedures, and the quiet faith that doing things correctly will eventually make things right.

Suguru Geto believes in something else.

When Kana meets him through her work, he appears thoughtful, composed, almost gentle-a man raising two orphaned girls with care and unsettling ease. He listens. He remembers. He helps, without ever asking to be seen.

Then the children in her cases begin to sleep better.
Their fear vanishes.
No explanations follow.

What Kana doesn't yet understand is that some problems don't want to be solved-they want to be removed. And some kindness is simply another form of power.

Drawn toward a man she cannot fully read, Kana finds herself standing in the narrow space between relief and guilt, trust and suspicion, desire and something far more dangerous.

Because when someone offers to take the weight off your shoulders, the cost is rarely obvious at first. And desire often lets you forget to ask the questions you need answers to.
