Among the piles of Blitz salvage - the Jellicles' sacred Temple of Bastet - the silver tabby learns that survival has a price. Drafted into a life of forced service under the tyrannical protector Poseidon, Munkustrap finds a single reason to hope: Bombalurina. But in a world of rationing and iron-clawed rule, his brother Macavity plots a rise through the regime while their love is treated as a liability the Protector will not tolerate.
After the regime systematically tears them apart, Munkustrap is snatched from his home and sold into the brutal captivity of the Siamese.
Exiled and alone, he must navigate a city of ruins to find his way back. With unexplained murders thinning the tribe and a traitor in their midst, Munkustrap must finally embrace the "frightful job" he never wanted: becoming the Silver Protector.

This is the first part of an epic coming-of-age journey through the secret history of London's most famous cats.
