After Mara's mother dies in a drunk-driving accident, Rowan Calloway learns he has a five-year-old daughter he never knew existed. Overnight, his life and his family's life changes. His siblings discover they have a young niece who was kept hidden from them, tucked away and largely forgotten.

Mara grew up neglected, learning early how to stay quiet and out of the way. A previous car crash left her partially deaf and she was born blind in one eye. Her hearing was never treated and never known. By the time Rowan brings her home, Mara has already learned to navigate a world that isn't catered to her. She learns to not ask for help, and Rowan has no idea how much of the world she can't fully see or hear.

As Rowan tries to step into the role of a father he never expected to be, he struggles to understand a child who doesn't react the way he thinks she should.
