Kitty, is the daughter of a man who has committed a terrible crime, one that he got away with due to lack of evidence. In 1987 two girls disappear, and although the shadow of suspicion is cast on Kitty’s father, nothing further happens. Kitty, however, knows what happened. She was an accidental witness to a horrible crime and has been carrying this secret for twenty years. Kitty is torn between the fond, warm memories she has of her father that over-arched her childhood that are destroyed by one tragic event that cast him in a different light entirely and her conscience that won’t let her rest until she has done what she feels she ought to. In response to this cognitive dissonance, Kitty flees from her former self by changing her name, her looks, and ultimately she runs from her country, leaving everything behind on a whim and going as far as she can afford. She goes so far she denies that anything has happened at all. But as she discovers, the faster she runs, the harder it is to escape the old ghosts that haunt her in daylight.
