Max was like most other people, very nervous to go to high school, but he's best friend, Zoey, was very exited. Max had a secret that only Zoey knew, and it was important to Max that it stayed that way. Max gets picked on a lot, and he didn't know why until middle school, he is gay. He was told that when he goes to high school, he's going to get beat up. He was scared so much he started puking when August came along. The only friend he has is Zoey, other people don't like him. For multiple months, the main character has been hiding themselves from this boy, Tal, because they've been scared of what Tal may think of them. After a while of waiting and hiding, Tal finally notices the main character and automatically falls in love with them; they had love at first sight. Slowly this major change affected the main character, their everyday life, and experiences they haven't had before. Their friends leave them and the main character is left with Tal and a few of his friends.
