This is the letter Lula Watson wrote to her daughter Barrie on her second birthday.

Scarred in the fire that destroyed her beauty and killed her husband and exiled from the family plantation by her father who was afraid that her gift for finding lost things would reveal his darkest secret, Lula was unable to communicate honestly with her daughter face to face. But she wrote to Barrie every year on her birthday.

The letters were lost for many years, and even when they are found, Barrie's unresolved anger at the secrets her mother kept from her and her grief over her mother's death make it hard for her to face reading them.
