Standing at the edge of the water, Freen dug her hands deep into her jacket pockets, staring at the skyline. Somewhere behind her, the world carried on-street vendors calling out their final orders, tuk-tuks zipping past, couples walking hand-in-hand toward midnight cafés. But in her head? A quiet war raged on. She was losing Becky. Not literally, of course. Becky wasn't moving away. She wasn't disappearing into thin air. Yet, somehow, the reality felt worse. In two weeks,, Becky would be someone's wife. Someone else's comfort, someone else's safe place.
