Upside Down (and Around Again)

The bats are faster than they look.

"Mike," Will pants, panic sharp in his throat.

"I know," Mike says, and he grabs Will's hand.

Not his wrist. Not his sleeve. His hand, fingers locking like they've done this a hundred times before. The contact jolts Will forward, pulls him into Mike's pace, and suddenly he's not running alone.

A bat dives low, close enough that Will hears the snap of its wings. Mike yanks him sideways, and they stumble, barely staying upright.

"Sorry," Mike blurts, even as he drags Will forward again.

"Don't," Will says sharply. "Just... don't let go."

"I won't."

A promise.
