The Last Embrace

The Last Embrace is a short story of Elena, a young woman who lost her entire family during the war and is forced into a forbidden romance with Oliver, a British officer stationed in Spain as part of the occupying troops. It is set in the eerie aftermath of a war between Britain and Spain in the 1940s. As tensions post-war in Spain increase, their romance, which started as a haven from their trauma, becomes increasingly risky. In addition to juggling her developing feelings for a man who stands for everything she has been taught to hate and distrust, Elena must deal with the pressures of a society that is still recovering. Oliver first lays eyes on Elena when she's made to tend to British soldiers as well as her Spanish soldiers. He immediately is drawn to her but she hates him since he's a British officer but will help if he's wounded, she thinks he and his friend are annoying.
