Lilith Harrington was a troubled child from the moment she was born, blue and starved of oxygen.
Her mind was a cruel mistress, conjuring increasingly disturbing ways to torment her. She had convinced herself the man was simply another one of its games, a figure lurking in the ever-darkening corners of her life.
Her brother tried to convince her that nothing in Hawkins, Indiana, was amiss. Even when ravines split through the earth, the government insisted they were caused by an earthquake. But the ravines glowed red beneath the moonlight.
The man, however, believed her. He listened when another soul wouldn't; he was there when her mind threatened to overrule her. Logically, she knew that she must be hallucinating. But he was Lilith's comfort, the one constant in her horrifying life.
Will tried to convince her to stay. So did El, Max, and Steve. But she couldn't fathom the thought of why they would care; she couldn't reconcile their concern with how she viewed herself. They didn't understand, he told her. She listened.
He promised her a world where she would never feel unwanted again. All she had to do was let him teach her how to build it.
