When Madeline arrives in Oxford with a single suitcase and a fractured heart, she believes distance will finally give her freedom. Freedom from her mother's illness. Freedom from a home that tried to shrink her dreams. Freedom from the fear that she is unlovable unless she obeys.

Oxford, however, is nothing like the life she imagined. The city is loud, polished, and full of people who seem to belong effortlessly. British party culture overwhelms her, the college halls echo with loneliness, and nights alone bring back the anxiety she thought she had left behind. Madeline is learning how to live for herself for the first time, and it terrifies her.

Johnny Callahan is everything Oxford already knows and admires: captain of the football team, charming without trying, steady in a way that makes people lean toward him. But beneath the confidence is someone tired of being strong for everyone else, someone who understands silence more than noise.

As Madeline navigates independence, culture shock, and the complicated love she still holds for her mother, she must decide who she is without anyone else defining her. And as Johnny confronts the pressure of expectations placed on him, he begins to realize that love doesn't have to be loud to be life-changing.
