Kang Minjae, 25, drifted through college like a warning sign-expulsions, fights, vandalism trailing him like a record no one bothered to erase. He sat in the back of an elective he barely attended, scrawling symbols of defiance while waiting for the next reason to be thrown out. Eve was his opposite in posture if not in pressure: front row, disciplined, outwardly composed, her half-Korean background and polished manners masking a life narrowed by expectation. They met by accident in the library, irritation preceding interest. Minjae's sarcasm met Eve's controlled politeness, neither especially kind, neither honest. Their conversations stayed sharp and surface-level-jabs about authority, dry humor about failure, stories traded without trust. She found his disorder distracting but useful; he found her stability dull yet strangely magnetic. They spoke over coffee once, exchanging complaints without listening. Minjae never noticed how carefully Eve avoided specifics, or how little of herself she revealed. He mistook distance for calm. What connected them wasn't warmth or understanding, but proximity-two people circling each other while missing what actually mattered.
