Young Johnny is separated from his widowed father during Operation Pier Piper and ends up on the Island of Sodor, a place where every machine has their own faces. One of them is an E2 class tank engine named Thomas, who knows his father back in 1914.
Meanwhile William Morris fights on different fronts (Europe -> North Africa -> Burma) with two things: survive to see his son again and figure out his childhood friend is.
Thomas is a the NWR #1 tank engine who decides to look after Johnny who reminds him of someone in the last war.
