The mech suit never got fixed, and some poor fuckers damn near blew their heads off messing with the Astral pulse; that explosion did it in. No more playing hero for Robert.
With his motivation dwindling and Shroud's victory feeling inevitable, can you blame Robert for gaining some weight? The gym just wasn't rewarding, and all that brandy was bound to cause an ACTUAL dad bod at some point. No motivation, insecurity that shocked even himself and a stagnant (at best) love life have left Robert feeling... awful, honestly.
Flambae definitely isn't a mind reader, but he picks up on Roberts mood.
