"I'm not asking you to sleep with me. I'm not asking you to throw away your principles or compromise yourself professionally. I'm just asking-" Phainon reached out slowly, giving Anaxa every opportunity to pull away, and touched his hand where it rested on his knee. "I'm just asking if we can stop pretending this isn't happening."

Anaxa's breath caught. He looked down at Phainon's hand on his, and for a long moment, he didn't move. Then slowly, he turned his hand over and laced their fingers together.

"This is a terrible idea," he said softly.

"Probably."

"You're going to break my heart."

"Or you're going to break mine."

"Both, maybe. Most likely both."

But he didn't let go of Phainon's hand. Instead, he squeezed it gently, and Phainon felt that simple contact like electricity through his entire body.
