I just stared at my stepfather for a moment. His words hurt me. Finding my mate was the one goal I had in life. It was the only thing he couldn't have taken away from me.
Before I could stop myself, I started to speak. "I wonder if mom knows you only married her for power."
Suddenly his hand reached out and grabbed my throat. He growled and then slammed me against the wall. The bruises already set on my back were stinging from the blow and I was sure there would be a new one around my neck after this.
My stepfather looked me in the eye for a few seconds, as if trying to intimidate me, then dropped me to the ground.
"Go to your room," he growled.

Bang! I sat bolt upright. Did I imagine that? That noise? What was it? I clambered out of bed and almost fell down the stairs with the panic that had set in.
