Shadow, abused by her alcoholic father and abusive mother, was taught to fight by a water demon, Amaya, after a demon friend, Amethyst, died in an accident. An unnamed goddess manipulated Shadow into killing her parents at age eight. Shadow then ran away and was adopted by the goddess Tsukino, living with her and her sister Blossom. Later, Shadow befriended a human named Elizabeth. At eleven, Shadow ran away again, living in the woods with another human, Lexianna, and an angel, Maklaya, and her sister Clover. They eventually discovered a kingdom called Columbus.
