Major Simon Cooper travels to Fort Myers despite his doubts and the severe storm, determined to personally evaluate a controversial but promising recruit from the O'Connor family. Upon arriving at the much larger base, he is granted permission by the local general to observe the recruits over the coming days and decide whether one of them is fit to join his unit. While Cooper approaches the task with professional distance and skepticism, his assignment places him on a path that will draw him closer to the young O'Connor-setting the stage for a connection that begins as duty and suspicion, but will slowly develop into something far more personal and profound.
