Courtney was happier than she had ever been. A penthouse in New York, a successful career as a lawyer and a life lacking secrets. However, that all quickly shatters when her brother and sister-in-law pass and she is forced to return to Mystic Falls for her son and niece.

The town is colder than she remembers. Jeremy doesn't want her there. Elena is trying her hardest to keep the peace. Courtney doesn't want to replace what she can't replace. But grief forces proximity, and proximity forces confrontation.

They watch the future play out and the very things Courtney had once ran from are now things she has to protect the two teenagers from. Without Grayson, keeping secrets and protecting the two children proves to be harder than Courtney had anticipated. In the midst of all the chaos of keeping Jeremy away from his father, preventing Elena from being killed and raising two teenagers Courtney finds herself falling for the town's 100 something year old screw-up.

Turns out running away from things you are scared of doesn't mean you'll never have to face them again.
