Out of safety and habit, Simon instinctively grabbed his gun from his bedside drawer and headed for the door. Looking out the peephole, he saw no one. Anyone could be standing just out of view of his vision. Hesitantly and slowly, he opened up the door and got in position to fight.

When nothing charged at him, he felt the adrenaline rush simmering. His eyes darted around before they finally went down.

A baby, covered by a thin blanket in a basket on his doorstep.
