Their son, Jake Hale, is fourteen, quiet, and far too exceptional for a normal life. In middle school, he's already a mathematical genius on par with his father, Level 16 in advanced mathematics, while also inheriting his mother's terrifying combat instincts. With a photographic memory, unnatural adaptability, and an instinct for fighting that borders on frightening, Jake learns faster than anyone around him-whether he wants to or not.
But genius doesn't make life simple.
When Jake gets into a violent fight at the end of the school year while defending a classmate, he's suspended for two weeks. Instead of punishing him, his parents recognize the truth: normal school was never going to suit him. So they offer him a choice.
