In the pastel towers of the Mallow Society, magic is orderly, beautiful, and unquestioned.
In this dystopian world, familiars are not chosen by witches they are assigned by fate and law.

Every witch knows the rule:
On her eighteenth birthday, she will receive a cat.

White cats belong to the wealthy and powerful.
Gray cats are given to scholars and historians.
Black cats serve spies and enforcers of the coven.
Stray-looking cats are reserved for ordinary citizens.

Until Ximena De La Rosa.

On the night of her Familiar Ceremony, when silver light fills the hall and cats descend from the stars, Ximena's magic does something impossible.
Instead of a cat, a tiny yorkie steps into her circle, wagging its tail as if it has been waiting for her all along.

The coven calls it an error.
A corruption.
Something that must be corrected.

But as Ximena bonds with her so-called "wrong" familiar, she begins to sense something the Mallow Society has long tried to erase: magic was never meant to be controlled.
