There has always been a quiet gap inside Oliver, an emptiness he cannot explain. He does not know the word for loneliness, only the ache it leaves behind. Nothing in his strange existence in the dark ever fills it.

Then he finds a boy who should not be there, frightened and fragile, and Oliver moves without thinking. He protects him first. He understands him later. Being with Will softens the emptiness in a way nothing else ever has. Oliver does not know why, but he senses that Will is the beginning of an answer he has been searching for, even if he does not yet understand the question.
