Masochist is fragmented, confessional novel about obsession, comparison, and the damage that can be caused once fixation becomes law. June grows up invisible; in her home, at school and eventually within her own body. When a friendship falls, what's left behind is not absence, but fascination. June begins a journey of measuring herself against a girl who seems effortlessly talented, and admired. What had started as grief slowly mutates into imitation, control and self-erasure; as June's world is narrowed into numbers, routines, documentation, and proof. Written in a poetic, nonlinear voice, Masochist examines emotional neglect, parasocial relationships, and the quiet ways young people learn to erase themselves. TW/CW: abuse & neglect, bullying/cyberbullying, ED behaviors (non-graphic), body image, medical trauma, adult boundary violations, mental health struggles, SI (referenced).
