She hadn't stopped running until she made it home.
The door slammed behind her, every lock clicked into place, and she stood there, chest heaving, trying to convince herself she'd imagined it. But deep down, she knew she hadn't. Everyone in the city had felt him. The streets had gone silent before he ever appeared. That kind of fear only belonged to one being.
She slowly stepped toward the window and peeked outside.
Nothing.
No people. No movement. No sound.
Then every muscle in her body locked.
Someone was behind her.
She hadn't heard the door open. She hadn't heard footsteps. She hadn't heard breathing. Yet two arms slowly wrapped around her waist, holding her in place. Her rabbit ears immediately folded flat against her head before she could stop them. She tried to force them back up, but they only trembled. Her body knew the truth before she could lie to herself.
A warm stream slid down her legs.
She couldn't stop it.
She was terrified.
His voice was calm. Almost gentle.
"Are you scared?"
"N-No."
The answer barely left her mouth.
A quiet chuckle brushed against her ear.
"But your ears are down."
Her breath caught. Tears burned her eyes as her ears twitched, fighting to lift, only to fall again. She couldn't control them. She couldn't control anything.
Another long silence settled between them before he spoke again.
"What made you run away from me?"
She couldn't answer. She only shook in his arms, too afraid to breathe.
His hand gently traced one of her lowered ears.
"I must need to remind you who I am."
