Once, the Sorceresses of House Ifan were legendary for their service to the Sanctified Kingdom of Alkith. Invading Empires, malicious Demons and wicked wielders of the arcane were all foiled by their wisdom and the power of their magic. A curse placed upon their bloodline brought an end to those days, the final spiteful act of one of the last foes they defeated ensuring all who followed after would be beset by eternal dire luck. Centuries have passed since that day, and the passage of time, the arrival of new heroes to the Kingdom, and the march of technology has only cemented the decline of House Ifan's legacy. Lady Morgan has known this story all her life. Abysmal fortune is as natural to her as breathing. Leading a (relatively) quiet life as a breaker of less persistent curses and all-around aid in sorcerous matters, she has long since accepted that her idle explorations of her family's curse are unlikely to truly bear any fruit. But when the curse inexplicably begins to worsen, she is left with no choice but to deepen her investigation, even if it requires her to trust in a mysterious, impossibly kind stranger, and unveil secrets that some may have preferred to remain buried forever. Oren Hale discovers a memorial page for a boy who died four years ago and cannot explain why the photo looks exactly like him. After that, ordinary life starts to feel staged, like he is walking through a story someone else wrote. His tutor, Ayara, is smart, guarded, and dangerously easy to talk to. Their sessions shift into something riskier: honesty, which only makes the rest of the world feel stranger by comparison. As Oren tries to understand where the dead boy ends and he begins, the people closest to him keep steering him away from the truth. But the more he looks, the clearer it becomes: one of these lives is real, and the other is a mistake. He just doesn't know which one.
