Lavinia Clifford was exiled from her family home at sixteen for clandestinely taking her A-Levels, as her mother and father did not want her to pursue a degree in medicine. Through perseverance, as well as the assistance of a great-aunt, she is accepted into the medical school at Edinburgh University, befriending Timothy Turner. In 1971, for the Christmas holidays, Timothy asks Lavinia to accompany him to his hometown of Poplar to assist his father in his surgery. Lavinia accepts, though she is unprepared for the caveat along with it - pretend to be Timothy Turner's girlfriend during the holidays, as Timothy is not yet prepared to come out to his parents. This is all well and good, despite Lavinia's fiancé, Tom Hereward, intending to surprise Lavinia in Poplar for the holidays to announce their engagement, as well as prepare Phyllis Crane for the upcoming nuptials...
