Rylee's hands trembled slightly as he adjusted his glasses, his eyes scanning the circle of friends gathered in the park. They'd known each other since freshman year, and he'd been dreading this moment for what felt like forever. His wheelchair seemed to fade into the background as he took a deep breath, his voice steady. "Guys, I need to tell you something," Rylee said, his eyes meeting each of theirs. "I've been wanting to be honest with you about something, and I think now's the time." He paused, a small smile playing on his lips. "I'm gay." The group's reactions were a mix of surprise and support. Some nodded, others smiled, and one friend, Alex, jumped up to give him a hug. "We're here for you, Rylee. Always." As they welcomed him with open arms, Rylee felt a weight lift off his shoulders. He realized that his true self was worth sharing, spina bifida and all. For the first time in a long while, he felt like he could breathe a little easier.
