"What-" he started, the word cutting off as his head snapped toward me, confusion sharpening rapidly into something harder.
"What the hell was that?"
I didn't answer. I couldn't. The echo of that sentence was still lodged somewhere deep, tearing through carefully sealed fractures I had spent years learning not to feel. _ At least he hesitated_. Barnes took a step closer, his presence suddenly oppressive, demanding.
"He was talking to you." My grip on the gun tightened just slightly before I forced it to loosen, lowering it with mechanical precision as if the movement alone could restore control.
