Josephine Rice has spent her life believing she is "fragile." Diagnosed with a rare, progressive neurological condition, she survives on a strict regimen of medication that keeps her world dull, quiet, and safe. Or so she was told.

When she moves to the seemingly boring town of Hawkins, the high-frequency hum of the woods begins to trigger something the pills can no longer suppress. Strange echoes haunt her sleep, and her body is starting to react to sounds no one else can hear.

After a chance encounter with a group of local teenagers - just as obsessed with science as her brother - Josie begins to realize that what is happening to her is starting to look less and less like an illness.
