A moment that refused to stay quiet The clock above the café counter had been broken for years. Everyone knew it. Everyone ignored it. Except tonight. Rain pressed against the windows like it wanted in, blurring the city into streaks of silver and regret. The café was nearly empty, the kind of quiet that makes every sound feel louder than it should. A spoon clinked. A chair scraped. A breath held too long. Mara sat alone with a cooling cup of coffee and a phone that hadn't buzzed all evening. She wasn't waiting for anyone. That's what she told herself. The door opened. A man stepped in, shaking rain from his jacket, eyes scanning the room as if he were late for something important. He stopped when he saw her. Froze, just slightly. They hadn't planned this. That much was clear. He walked over anyway. "Do you mind?" he asked, gesturing to the chair across from her, like he didn't already know the answer. Mara shrugged. "It's a free world. For now." They sat in silence, the kind packed with unsent messages and almosts. Outside, thunder rolled like a warning. He glanced at the broken clock. Then at his watch. Then at her. "What time is it?" The question landed heavier than it should have. Not because of minutes or hours, but because of everything it carried. How long since they last spoke. How late it already felt. How early it still might be. Mara smiled, small and tired. "Depends," she said. "Are you asking about now, or about us?" He laughed softly. Not because it was funny, but because it hurt less than admitting the truth. They talked. Carefully. Honestly. The rain slowed. The coffee went cold. The clock stayed broken. When he finally stood to leave, neither of them checked the time again. Some moments aren't measured in seconds. They just happen when they're ready.

A heart murmur is the secret sound beneath the steady rhythm - the quiet confession the heart makes when it can no longer beat in silence. Not loud enough to alarm, but impossible to ignore once heard.
