A fire in the capital will one day take everything from him.

But long before that night, two brothers were simply trying to live.

Loukas and Yulius were raised in a quiet village far from the imperial capital, under the care of an old man who gave them shelter after their father died. With the threat of raiders returning to the village, Loukas sends his younger brother away with their uncle's caravan, determined to keep him safe.

But fate has other plans.

A strange girl named Goncheh is left behind in the village with Loukas. When winter arrives, and when the raids begin, both of them are forced to fight for survival.

When the battle finally ends, they travel south to the capital in search of Loukas's maternal family. Instead, they uncover something far more dangerous.
