For at least two decades, Wuthering Lake maintained a consistent annual average of five disappearances, most later subsequently confirmed as a homicide. In 1991, this pattern was abruptly disturbed by a series of mysterious disappearances with no apparent clues, with 24 cases documented over a three month period. nine months later, by the end of the year, the cumulative number had risen to 153. In 1992, the district discontinued calculation of an annual average after recording 50 disappearances within the first two months of the year. After the closure of the X-Files and the promise of possible dismissal, Fox Mulder finds himself on thin ice after joining the investigation of the murders in Wuthering Lake, a small district in the southern United States haunted by brutal dismemberments that with time are becoming increasingly frequent and frighteningly bloody. Y/N, whose only knowledge of Mulder was his long stained reputation and passion for the macabre, finds herself torn between resigning from her career as an agent to return to her previous job as a doctor or blindly helping Mulder on a case with no clues, no suspects, just a bloodbath caused by someone-or something-that seems to feed on violence.
