What if... Steve wasn't the only one they found in the ice.

When I was a kid, my favorite thing to do was sleep. I loved to sleep because I loved to dream. My imagination seemed endless. In the morning, I would remember my dreams for a while, but they eventually faded for the most part. The happy feelings they incited always remained though. I would dream of jungle cruises, ice cream for breakfast, and sledding down a never-ending hill. My favorite dreams were always the ones where I was flying. It didn't matter what I was flying over or why I was flying. Those were the mornings I begged for five more minutes. I never was a fan of waking up, and it wasn't because I was tired. It was because I didn't want to leave my dreams.
But nothing lasts forever. Eventually sleep lost its luster. Dreams turned to nightmares. Waking up became salvation wrapped in stars and moonlight.
It's ironic that my favorite type of dream, when it became real, was the literal death of me. Dying is a lot like falling asleep. They are both preceded by the knowledge that it's coming soon, most of the time anyways.
Steve did what he had to do. Saving the world never comes without a price. The price that time was him and I... I thought?
Steve woke up a lot earlier than me, four years to be exact. No one knows why I took so long to wake up after thawing, but I think I have a clue. Steve is a hero who has responsibilities and a drive, no- a need, to save those around him. He needs to save the world. Me on the other hand, I don't have a drive like him. I was only there because of happenstance. And as it happens to be, I am not the hero who was needed.
