I smooth my expression.
"That is not how I intended this conversation to begin," I reply calmly. "So I am going to ignore that entirely and instead say - good morning, Rennykins It is rather chilled in here, is it not?"

A quiet scoff sounds from Corveth on the mat behind him.
Renley does not look back, but something in his posture sharpens in warning.
A muscle ticks in his jaw.
"No, Elara. I did what you asked. The answer is still no."
My stomach drops despite myself.
"I am willing to beg," I say quietly. "I will get on my knees if that is what it takes."
He steps close enough that the warmth of him brushes my skin. His hand braces lightly against the pillar beside my head, not touching me but boxing me in all the same. He lowers his mouth near my ear, his voice dropping so it does not carry beyond us "As much as I would enjoy you begging, Princess, it is not these circumstances I imagined."
