A Ballad of Gold and Glory

As the modern world evolves, increased exposure to chemicals and radiation has triggered genetic changes across human populations. Scientists identify the emerging genetic phenomenon as Homo Novus - the New Humans: humans born with extraordinary powers and abilities.

Power Reis is just fifteen years old when she gets the first mark on her criminal record. She isn't surprised - no one is. When you were from the Rooks, the slums of London, nothing was expected from you. She is forced to move back home after running away to complete her weeks of community service.

The global divide spreads between humans and these Abnormals. They are dangerous, capable of exceeding mortal laws. Crime rates are rocketing, and the only ones able to save citizens are Superheroes.

During her community service, Power finds a discarded packet of pills and impulsively takes them. The next day, she wakes up with superpowers. She decides to use her abilities in various robberies to make enough money for her family. But when that backfires, she strikes up a deal with hero Golden Guardian: become his sidekick instead.

The perks were great: money, fame, and self-redemption. But Power slowly learns that the world of Heroes is not what it seems. Governments dictate heroic decisions, and Superheroes are nothing but pieces on their corrupt chessboards. She begins to question who the good guys are, and as the hatred for her newfound kin rises, she battles with the line between doing the right thing and doing what is expected of her.
