The Long Fall of the Mighty

If you ask me when everything began to change, I won't give you a date. I'll give you a face.

Lucas Graham has always been louder than the room. He argued like breathing was optional and debate was oxygen. He used to say the world only respected those who refused to kneel.

Then he went to a retreat.

It wasn't dramatic. No shaved head, no sudden withdrawal from society. Just a weekend outside the city that promised clarity in a world too loud to think in. I teased him about it when he came back.

He didn't tease back.

That was the first thing I noticed.

He listened longer. Spoke slower. Stopped reacting to headlines that once sent him pacing across my flat at midnight. When I asked what they did there, he only said, "We let go."

"Of what?" I asked.

"The need to win."

The city didn't collapse after that. Traffic still choked the roads. Politicians still smiled on television. Markets still opened at dawn. Nothing burned. Nothing fell apart.

But the powerful began to step aside. A director resigned. A councillor withdrew. A businessman dissolved his company without explanation.

They all attended the same retreat.

When I confronted Lucas about it, he didn't deny it. He only looked at me with a calm I couldn't argue with.

"It's not about leaving," he said gently. "It's about standing together."

I told myself it was a phase. Another movement people would tire of.

But movements don't make men kneel willingly.

And whatever this is, it isn't chaos.

It's patience.

And I think we're already too late.
