At ten, when Maelis was introduced to little five-year-old Guinevere as a royal companion, she quickly learned that the little girl was... different.

She could see the future.

Not possibilities.
Not maybes.
Anyone's fate that interlinked with hers.

Some people were frightened when the little girl said something, only for it to become true later.

But Maelis wasn't all that normal either.

So, she never questioned it when Guinevere tugged her down another corridor, just before guards passed by the hall they were supposed to be asleep in.

At the time, all she could do was laugh.

Guinevere was only a child-
The toddler who clung to her dress sleeve when they raced through the castle halls at night, a girl who cried whenever her 'Elis' had to leave to train.

Maelis never thought to ask why Guinevere always looked at her as if she hung the sun in the sky.

After all...

How could she have known that the future Guinevere watched so closely was her own?

She only wished that Guinevere wouldn't be so cryptic at the strangest of times.

"Do you like foxes?"

"What?" Maelis blinked.

Guinevere squinted at her, "Foxes."
