"Why?" The question hit the tall, skinny figure like a dart, stopping him at the door.
"Huh?"
"Why'd you do it?"
He flicked his pointed chin over his shoulder, glancing at the sheriff. For the first time this evening, he seemed to falter. His jaw went slack as his breath quickened, chest rising and falling heavily as his eyes darted around the room in a state of paranoia.
"Why'd you drink?"
A sigh of relief escaped between his ivory lips, followed by a lighthearted shrug. "Things... used to be simpler." His eyes settled on the wooden floorboards, then darted back up to meet Dante's. "This is what remains."
