Hailey (Ice) Mitchell was a naval aviator in her past life, having graduated Topgun at the top of her class. She was the daughter of Pete (Maverick) Mitchell and niece to Tom (Iceman) Kazansky. It was said that she was the perfect combination of both Ice and Maverick, reckless like Mav and Calm, cold and no mistakes like Iceman. She was best friends with Rooster, Phoenix and Hangman.
After their last mission together, Hailey's plane is shot down, colliding with the mountain just as a large bolt of lightning hits its peak.

All she remembers is waking up in a field of wheat as a young child again and coming face to face with a young Kate Carter.
She remembers the blonde smiley girl in front of her grabbing her hand, running back through the rain, thunder and lightning, back to the front porch where Kate's mom had been calling after her. After sitting down by the fireplace with blankets and hot cocoa, Hailey tells the two everything she can remember about her old life. The only thing she has left of it are the three sets of dog tags she never takes off, Mavericks, Iceman's and her own.
From that day on, the girls were raised as sisters.
