Avery Dixon's life ain't never been easy. Daddy's a drunk, big brothers are always fightin', and the world went to hell before she even had a chance to grow up. But she don't cry about it. She don't whine. She survives. That's what Dixons do.
Then comes this boy-Carl Grimes. Sheriff's kid. Walks around like he got the weight of the whole damn world on his little twelve-year-old shoulders. Thinks he's grown. Thinks he gotta protect everybody, even when nobody asked him to.
At first, Avery don't think much of him. Just another kid, just another face in this messed-up world. But time does something funny to people. They grow. They change. And somehow, somewhere between all the fights, all the blood, all the running and losing and trying to hold on, Carl becomes something else to her.
He's stubborn, she's mean. He's got hope, she don't believe in nothing. But he looks at her like she's worth something, like she ain't just some broken thing held together by spit and rage.
And that?
That's dangerous.
