For centuries, The Faith has ruled much of the galaxy through ritualized violence, forced conversion, and holy bloodlines maintained through natural birth. As artificial wombs replaced pregnancy across species, the Faith declared synthetic birth sinful-rendering humanity indispensable.
Nerezza "Nessa" Keseor, a human woman from a dying mining station, volunteers to become a Bride to spare another girl the fate.
