The Sounds We Kept

Iggy records things before they disappear.

The cicadas in the vacant lot. The sound of wind before the houses went up. The sound of a quiet street at night when everyone is already asleep.

But then, her neighbor Therese starts talking into the recorder. She does it without asking, following him to wherever he wants to record. Over one year in Porta Viento Subdivision, the tapes fill up with ordinary afternoons, with the things neither of them says out loud, with the sounds of a place that's slowly becoming somewhere else.

He thinks he's preserving the neighborhood. He doesn't know yet what he's really keeping.

Some things only make sense when you play them back.
