She should have left the study.

She knew that.

But Diego Moreno was standing too close.

"You ask too many questions," he said quietly.

"I teach a curious child," Lila replied, lifting her chin. "It's a bad habit."

His eyes darkened slightly. Not anger.

Something else.

"Curiosity," he said slowly, stepping closer, "can be dangerous in my world."

She swallowed but didn't step back.

"Then maybe you shouldn't have hired me."

Silence.

The air shifted between them.

His hand lifted - not touching, just hovering near her waist. Close enough for her to feel the warmth of him.

"You don't understand where you are," he murmured.

"Then explain it."

A muscle ticked in his jaw.

"You don't want that explanation."

Her breath hitched when his fingers finally brushed her side - barely there. Testing. Warning.

Or claiming.

"Careful, Lila," he said softly. "You're standing very close to a line you won't be able to uncross."

"And you're the one who stepped closer," she whispered.

That did it.

His hand tightened at her waist, pulling her just enough that her breath collided with his.
