Four children forge an unbreakable friendship during their seven school years, but a war torments them all, leading to the betrayal of one of them on Halloween of '81, Peter Pettigrew, the rat.
This betrayal haunts everyone else, driving them to the brink of madness, causing Sirius Black, James Potter's best friend, to seek desperate measures to undo "his mistake." This involves time travel, causing all the arrows of fate to spin in opposite directions and aimlessly. Remus Lupin tries to somehow correct Sirius's impulses; "Playing with time is no joke, and there are no spells that bring the dead back to life, as you well know," Dumbledore had once said, but Sirius didn't know the kind of consequences that would follow from challenging the basic rules of magic.
